Public Schools Competing With Private

Public Schools 'Luring' Students Back

In what could be described as a condemnation of the public school system an article in the local Daily tells how the local school district aims to lure private students back into the public education system.

Imagine! With all the money that goes into the public school system and the fact it is 'free' to parents, enough families are willing to pay the extra cost to be certain their children get a good start in life.

It is no secret that schools like Aspengrove simply have a better record of excellence when it comes to delivering education than any of the public schools in Nanaimo. Some schools in Nanaimo have what could be described as an abysmal record.

The Fraser Institute reports that since 1997 public school enrollment has declined 11.3% while private school enrollment has increased by 22.4% during the same period.

If you consider the number of dollars the local school district collects in taxes you might be forgiven for wondering how in blazes a private school can even exist, let alone compete for students to the point the district seems to be adopting marketing practices to increase their falling 'market share'.

Perhaps the district needs to take a serious look at the product they are delivering and ask themselves why they are just not doing a better job. Heaven knows, there is enough tax dollars being thrown at the system, we should be expecting better results.
