Are Polls & Surveys Reliable?

Polling Firms Miss Election Results
Do Polls Mean Anything?

An article in today's Vancouver Sun highlights how badly well known polling companies such as Angus Reid & Ipsos Reid predicted the BC election results, as well as missing the Alberta and Ontario election outcomes.

Some of our elected city councillors like to point to an Ipsos Reid Taxpayer Satisfaction Survey done in Nanaimo last year as some sort of proof taxpayers are happy with city hall performance. Given recent results in much broader and more expensive polling, you might wonder if the Nanaimo survey based on 300 respondents which used a poor set of questions, actually is worth the $8,000 we paid for it.

The survey did however reveal that 50% of those responding said they would accept a cut in services before any more increases to taxes. A fact, city councillors seem to ignore, in particular Diane Brennan who claimed there is no evidence of taxpayer fatigue.
