City Could Keep Dams For Another Year

Dam Safety Branch
Did NOT Order Their Removal This Year

Councilors Brennan, Greves, Johnstone, Anderson and Mayor Ruttan did not have to order the removal of these dams this year!

In an article in today's Daily, reporter Tamara Cunningham quotes Scott Morgan, head of the safety section of B.C. Dam Safety as saying: "It is not up to the province on what dam owners do with their dams ....... they are the ones that determine how to mitigate the risk and the province .... accepts it or not.". "If they wanted to keep them (for another year), great, as long as they showed they would mitigate the risks then I would have been happy with that."

Is Councilor Brennan Clairvoyant?

Councilor Brennan is quoted as saying that waiting until 2014 would be far too long in the interest of public safety. Is she in receipt of information saying the big earthquake (which will level schools and the hospital and most of Nanaimo) is about to occur?

If she does, what is her immediate plans to 'earthquake proof' the rest of Nanaimo? She is also quoted as saying: "I don't know what people are complaining about".

Clearly she does not have a grasp of the situation, so I will attempt to explain it to her. The proposal put forward by Mr. Gale would have seen both dams in place this summer, with one being replaced next year and one the following year at a cost of $8.6 million. The people would always have had use of the park and one dam would have been kept in tact.

This plan will see both lakes empty mud pits this summer and most of the park in a useless state for the next two years. I hope she gets that! It also means that she and fellow councillors have committed to replacing these dams with NO IDEA of the cost. How much of this blank cheque spending can the city taxpayer afford?

What Will Council Do To Mitigate The Impending Peril?

Since any councilor supporting the immediate removal of these dams, must be convinced Nanaimo is facing disaster within the next year, are they recommending we all move, as clearly we can't 'disaster proof' all of Nanaimo in such short time.

  1. this article puts into question, if you are correct about the date written, and the authenticity of its author, the credibility of the e-mail receive by the city from dsb, demanding the removal of the dams, Monday, May 13. How dare you question the integrity, honesty and intelligence of the city's senior staff, do you not share in the opinions and faith of Diane Brennon regarding this august personage, does she not put her opinions and votes in the hands of these people, and our leader, how dare you not do the same. Where is your loyalty, man, his motives, his direction, his integrity is beyond reproach. Even our Mayor is a devout follower, how can you think him wrong. Hail! Hail! HAIL!
