Colliery Dam Park Lakes May 7, 2013

Dams Have Outlived Their Original Purpose?

Their First Benefit Served The Community By Washing Coal
No Longer Washing Coal They Still Serve The Community

If you have not been to Colliery Dam Park for a long time, or perhaps you have never visited the Park before, do yourself a favour and spend an hour or two there over the next few days. You will find them every bit as enjoyable as the more famous Bowen Park, and perhaps in some ways you will find them superior.

The idea that these parks will be just as user friendly without the lakes has to make you wonder what kind of logic is at play here. Clearly city staff put no value on these two lakes in 2010 when they declared that fixing the dams or replacing them was simply not a good use of tax dollars. A policy decision they made themselves without ever consulting city council or Nanaimo taxpayers.

Having stood the test of some 100 years, and having withstood the largest land based earthquake in Canadian history and being upgraded in the 80's, you have to wonder just what is the probability that anything has to be done with these dams at all.

You can always claim that any man made structure can fail when subject to enough force, such as an earthquake, but what is the honest probability that such an event will ever occur?

As a society do we really want our lives governed by armies of un-elected bureaucrats who seem to be driven so much by fear of what 'could' happen that they would willingly destroy such a delightful place to play and recreate?
