Colliery Dam Park Lakes To Come Out

Council Agrees To Remove Dams
And Rebuild Dams Without A Cost Estimate
Or Any Known Timeline

Councillors Brennan, Greves, Johnstone, Anderson and Mayor Ruttan voted to immediately proceed with the removal of the Colliery Dam Park dams and to replace both dams as soon as possible. This is the most expensive way of actually replacing these dams and in fact council has no idea what this method will actually cost.

When asked how long before the dams will be replaced, or how long Nanaimo residents will see the Park closed as the two lakes are turned into two mud pits is also an unknown. If this proceeds this year, the park will no doubt be completely closed to area residents and this choice of action will bring with it a whole host of problems, I doubt this council has considered.

Councillor Pattje brought a motion, that would have seen the dams remain in tact this year and the middle dam rebuilt next year and the lower dam built the following year. This would have been the most economical method of dam replacement that would have had the least impact on Nanaimo residents.

Councillor Pattje's motion was supported by Councillors Kipp, Bestwick and McKay and was defeated by the balance of council.

This is just another in a long list of questionable decisions this council has made and one has to wonder just what their rational is, as the claimed public safety concern is not consistent with other decisions they have made. Most recently the decision to continue using the theatre on Victoria Rd. when two engineers have said this building is not seismically sound.

I feel like I have been told I have 3 months to live. I sit by the waterfalls to restore my health.
I walk there for mental, emotional and physical health almost every day. I have lost so many things in my life...had them stripped away. Now this.
