'The Frame' Donated To City of Nanaimo
Who hasn’t had their picture taken in “The Frame” at Maffeo
Sutton Park? This public art installation has ‘framed’ numerous conversations
over the past year, with a common request being that the City retain the piece
for the long-term. From prom to family, and all the visits in between, this
piece has made quite an impact on the park.
“The Frame”
was fabricated and installed by Nanaimo artist Jason Gress in May 2012 as a
temporary public art piece. It is a double sided wooden sculpture attached to
concrete footings Maffeo Sutton Park. The views “framed” in the piece are
constantly changing.
The piece is owned by the
Nanaimo Art Gallery and was slated to go to an auction process in spring 2013.
However, the Nanaimo Art Gallery has offered to donate the art piece to the City
of Nanaimo. At the May 6th meeting of council they accepted the public art piece
as a donation. The additional
display time will require some exterior upgrades, but the piece will remain in
its current location at Maffeo Sutton Park for extended
enjoyment.
