Councillor Brennan Urged Council To Protect Colliery Dam and Spillway as a valued, non-renewable resource.
As Chair of the Nanaimo Community Heritage Commission she urged Mayor and Council to protect the Colliery Dam and spillway, describing them as finite and vulnerable and being the responsibility of Mayor and Council to protect them.
City staff have informed me that the plan is for the spillway to be preserved if the dam is removed.
ReplyDeleteIf the water levels were reduced to 3 or 4 feet by adding clean gravel, the water load on the dams would be reduced. With the reduced volume of water there would be minimal damage in the unlikely event of a dam failure.
ReplyDeleteThis way the pond could be used for swimming and they would not look any different.

ReplyDeleteLet common sense prevail. Appears that common sense is not very common anymore! City's website advises:
"The Lower and Middle Colliery Dams were built by the mining industry in 1911 for the sole purpose of providing a supply of water to wash coal. When coal mining ceased operation in Nanaimo, the body of water stored behind the dams was adopted for recreational use only."

ReplyDeleteRegarding the Colliery Dams' issue ... IMHO, council should be hearing the views of ALL persons who are eligible to vote in a municipal election in Nanaimo. Full stop.
