Your Public Safety Dollar At Work

At about 1:00 pm on Friday I was in the Strickland Street area when I hear the whine of a siren and saw the flash of lights as both an ambulance and fire truck raced to someone's aid.

The firetruck was on scene for maybe 45 seconds before being waved on and carrying back along through downtown on their way to the firehouse on Fitzwilliam Street.

How many of these pointless calls see our firetrucks speeding here and there rushing to emergencies easily handled by the more than capable ambulance crew already on scene?

  1. But hey, it gives my two year old son something to point at and say, "Whoa!"

  2. I think you are missing the point re: first responder, I do hope you are never in a position of testing your theory around cost... I would like whoever arrives first, ambulance or fire engine if they are about to save my child... and from what I have seen in my life in public service, it is the fire department saving lives as much as ambulance... sorry my friend, your view is limited.

  3. Anonymous, you are expressing what I believe is a commonly held view and would be interested to know if the actual statistics prove your claim vis a vis fire dept saving as many lives as ambulance.
I would like to know how many times fire arrives first, and of all the times they are called out, how many times they actually attend? It will be an interesting question to ask of the Fire Chief. I was amazed to learn that less than 2% of the calls the fire department responds to are actually fires.
