 Harper Government announces funding for short-sea shipping project in Nanaimo, British Columbia

OTTAWA — The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, on behalf of the Honourable Ed Fast, Canada’s Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Alberni, and Mr. Robert Bennie, Chair of Nanaimo Port Authority, today announced funding for a short-sea shipping project in British Columbia, further bolstering Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative (APGCI).

“Our government is proud to support job-creating short-sea shipping projects in British Columbia,” said Minister Van Loan. “Projects such as this one are not only important for Vancouver Island and British Columbia, they also support our greater Asia-Pacific Gateway transportation network and help increase our exports to fast-growing Asian markets. Investments like these have made Canada the ‘Gateway of Choice’ for trade between North America and Asia.”

Under APGCI, the Government of Canada is contributing up to $4.65 million to modernize the Nanaimo Assembly Wharf area and rehabilitate an aging dock that has not been active for over 10 years due to its condition.

“This project will not only enhance the Port’s ability to handle increased volume, in a more efficient manner, creating jobs, growth and prosperity in our communities,” said Dr. Lunney. “It will also reduce road congestion and travel time for users.”


Short-sea shipping is a multi-modal concept. It involves the marine transportation of passengers and goods that takes place within and between Canada and the rest of North America, helping to create jobs, growth and prosperity in local communities.

“The Nanaimo Port Authority is extremely excited with the support from the federal government for our short-sea shipping initiative that will establish a direct water link for Vancouver Island importers and exporters to Asia-Pacific markets. The NPA’s long term vision is to improve and enhance the movement of international cargo for Vancouver Island,” said Mr. Bennie.

The APGCI is a key element of the Government of Canada’s pro-trade plan to open new markets that increase Canadian exports and create jobs and prosperity. The federal government has invested $1.4 billion in infrastructure projects worth $3.5 billion in partnership with the four western provinces, municipalities and the private sector.
