BC Hydro Increase Could Hurt

Hydro Increase - Affordable?

While the above CBC News story is not really a surprise it is another example of the consumer being hit with yet another 'affordable' rate increase. Remember, Nanaimo taxes next year are on track for a 4.5% increase, water rates go up another 5% and another 7.5% for sewer (I think).

By themselves, all of these increases sound 'sustainable and affordable' but when they are combined and have to be paid from a fixed income or wages that are seeing nominal increases, if any, you must wonder when the 'affordable' tag no longer applies.

The Nanaimo tax and fees increase will likely mean at least another $125/yr. on the average Nanaimo household, for which the average Nanaimo taxpayer will see no increase in services whatsoever. Yet we will be told by our tax & spend city hall they believe the increases are both sustainable and affordable.
