Local stage actor Rick Meyers makes the
jump to the big screen
in the Nanaimo shot short film Greyscale.
in the Nanaimo shot short film Greyscale.
For those unfamiliar with Meyers, he is better known as
drag queen sensation Vikki Smudge. While the 12 minute mystery film is shrouded
in secrecy for obvious reasons, Meyers says that Greyscale is a huge departure for him and will be a surprise to his
fans.
“Everyone who knows me and my career knows
Vikki Smudge. While I love Vikki with all my heart, there’s a great amount of
excitement and nervousness to play someone else and to be a part of a project
where I’m unmasked and I have to show what I can do without the make-up and
costume. Hopefully, people won’t see Vikki Smudge or Rick Meyers but another
side to me altogether.”
The film, itself, is a testament to
Nanaimo, with the entire production team hailing from the Hub City. Shot over
three nights, Greyscale showcases a
local landmark Alice’s Restaurant. “It was very important for us to shoot in
Nanaimo” says Producer, Nicola McTaggart. “Not only does everyone involved call
it home, it’s a place where residents and businesses really embrace filmmaking.
As well, the city has such a diverse landscape and history. We didn’t have to
look very hard as all of our options were within our backyard. Alice’s is so
well known that we really consider it part of the Nanaimo identity.”
That said, it’s fitting Greyscale will make its world premiere
at the Vancouver Island Short Film Festival on February 7 & 8,
before embarking on the film festival circuit. “It will be great to premiere
here” says director Aaron Colyn. “We will have the chance to show it to our
family and friends on a big screen with a large audience. That is rare. It’s even more special to be
one of only three films made in Nanaimo to be fortunate enough to a part of the
festival”.
