Nanaimo Mayor Ruttan Seeks Youth Advice

City of Nanaimo launches Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council

Council provides opportunity for Nanaimo youth to participate in civic government, develop leadership

On January 13th, 2014 Nanaimo’s City Council approved the creation of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.  The 12 member Youth Council, comprised of youth between the ages of 15 and 24, will advise City Council on youth related issues, provide input on Council agenda items from a youth perspective and develop their understanding of municipal politics and democratic processes.

“We appreciate the need for youth to play an active part in the decision making in our community, and are pleased that an opportunity now exists to engage with young people on a regular basis to hear what they have to say about community issues” commented Nanaimo’s Mayor, John Ruttan, adding “it is important to support the development of the next generation of leaders by exposing them to all aspects of municipal governance.

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council will be meeting on a quarterly basis, twice yearly with the Mayor and twice yearly with the whole of Council.   They will consider many of the items that appear on Council’s agenda, while also adding items specific to youth in the community.

  1. Here's something the new youth committee should bring up with Mayor and Council - Get the 23-year-old Councilor George Anderson to attend the new budget deliberation meetings set up specifically for council!

I just checked with Legislative Services and the young whipper snapper politician has only been to one, yes 1, entire meeting - and that was the very first one on August 29.

He has not shown-up at all for 9 meetings. And he has either shown-up late or left early for 3 of the meetings.

And Anderson says in one of the local papers he's being discriminated against because of age!

It's not that at all dear boy - it's your lack of tardiness!

  2. I believe Councilor Anderson's attendance is properly stated, as I have attended these meetings also. I doubt if Anonymous meant 'lack' of tardiness.

  3. Thanks Jim!

I typed too fast and my English couldn't catch up.

Did mean it's Mr. Anderson's TARDINESS that is the problem!
