Nanaimo To Test Harewood Sirens

City set to conduct three minute siren test Wednesday, January 15 at 10:30 a.m.
Residents advised that no action is required

As part of the City of Nanaimo’s short-term mitigation plan to address public safety concerns resulting from the identified risks associated with the Middle and Lower Colliery Dams; and in an ongoing effort to support emergency preparedness procedures for residents living within the identified inundation area below the dams, on Wednesday, January 15 at 10:30 a.m., City officials will conduct a sound test of the recently installed evacuation siren.  Please note the following information.
  • Members of the community who live or conduct business within the identified inundation area are advised that the sounding of the siren is a test only and that NO ACTION is required.
  • The siren will sound for three minutes at full volume from approximately 10:30 a.m. through to 10:33 a.m.  This is the actual amount of time the siren will sound if there is a real emergency.
  • Prior to the test commencing, residents who have signed up for the City’s Call Alert service will receive a recorded voice message by phone notifying them of the time the siren will sound.
  • In conjunction with the siren test, students and staff attending John Barsby Community School have scheduled an evacuation drill which will commence once the siren test is completed
  •  Following next Wednesday’s sound test, City officials will continue to test the siren on a scheduled basis on the first Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 10:05 a.m., during which the sirens will sound at 50% volume for approximately 30 seconds. Signage notifying residents of the test schedule will be placed at the base of the siren.  Members of the public are strongly advised not to stand below the siren during a test.

Installation and testing of the siren was originally planned for October 2013, however shipping challenges and equipment vandalism delayed this schedule.
