Things On The Net That Make You Smile ???

Only in Canada you say .......

Are people with pipe bombs allowed on planes !!!!!!!!!

This is really something from the Twilight Zone, and the only reason it qualifies as something that might make you smile, is because the options would likely blow your blood pressure.

Seems this nice, clean cut looking young fellow was on his way to Mexico with his family last September and departing through Edmonton airport. On his way through security, a baggage check revealed an item not allowed in carry-on, a live pipe bomb. Yes, not a small bottle of shampoo, or perhaps nail clippers, but a fully functional pipe bomb complete with fuse.

The young fellow is reported as being genuinely surprised that the pipe bomb he had made months early was still in his camera bag. I am only presuming that the security inspector did what any typical Canadian would do, and didn't want to interrupt the young fellows vacation, so offered to return the bomb and allowed the man to board the plane. It is reported the young man declined the return of his bomb, which likely spared him from rotting in a Mexican prison as their airport security might be a tad less friendly.

The Canadian security personnel put the pipe bomb in the basket with confiscated shampoo, bottled water and other dangerous things we can no longer fly with. Perhaps 'pipe bombs' were not on the list of items to confiscate which is why the return of the item was offered?

Four days after the incident, I guess someone thought it wise to advise RCMP about the bomb, who arrested the young fellow on his return from Mexico. A court appearance resulted in a $100 fine and an order to contribute $500 to a children's burn unit. It seems the judge and others involved didn't think the fellow had larceny on his mind but was just your typical youth who thought it would be cool to see if he really could blow stuff up.

  1. This fellow was 18 at the time of the incident. Which is why he has been identified that of course wouldn't be the case if he were a young offender.
