Navigating Nanaimo - Nanaimo Museum Exhibit

Absolutely Fascinating!

We know that coal is what Nanaimo was founded upon and that it was extensively mined for years. However, the scope of those mine workings is mind boggling when you view them on the seven metre-long map that is now on display at the Nanaimo Museum.

The map (all drawn to scale) shows the vast network of tunnels extending from the Cedar landfill site, all the way to Brechin Hill and as far east as Protection Island. The display also includes a section devoted to the E&N Railway land grant which attracted many settlers and development.

The exhibit will be on display until March 22 and I would urge one and all to spend an hour or so getting some insight into the labyrinth of mine workings that literally honeycomb areas of our city.

Follows are a few pictures to give you a glimpse of this incredible exhibit. Still haven't stopped by to see it?? What are you waiting for?

For information about the exhibit and Museum hours contact the Nanaimo Museum at 250- 753-1821.
