Nanaimo Recycling Exchange Needs Over $2.5 Million

Nanaimo Recycling Exchange Questions

A couple of burning questions are needing answering about the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange's request for immediate assistance of over $2,500,000 and an ongoing subsidy of $300,000+.

The need to vacate their current premises is not a surprise to the management and board responsible for running the exchange which exists because they handle some recyclables other private centres don't handle. Whether they should be charging the users of this service a tipping fee similar to what they charge for yard waste to offset these costs could be a partial solution to their financial woes.

They appear to be following the same path that the composting plant at Duke Point followed, which is waiting until the eleventh hour and then basically telling Nanaimo taxpayers to 'pay up' or they will have to close.

Before the powers that be at the Regional District or the city of Nanaimo yield to this not for profit's demands there needs to be far more information forthcoming about how this facility is being operated now, and why they are in such a dire operating situation.

At the same time Nanaimo Recycling Exchange is looking for $2.5 million a private company is wanting the spend $2 million of their own to build a recycling depot in Chase River.
