Canadian Opinion Poll
April 3, 2014 – During a period that has seen two Canadian premiers resign in the face of sinking approval ratings while a third fights to be re-elected, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall continues his tenure as most popular provincial leader in the country, according to the latest quarterly survey on this subject from Angus Reid Global (ARG).
The most recent results show Wall’s approval rating is unchanged from late last year at 66 per cent. Wall has held job approval ratings at or above 63 per cent since August 2011.
Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil maintains his second place ranking (59%), up two points since December (57%). Recent changes in provincial leadership shuffle the rankings of other premiers. The new premier of Newfoundland, Tom Marshall, is now ranked third in Canada on job performance (49%). This represents a 25 point difference over his Progressive Conservative predecessor Kathy Dunderdale. Dunderdale - then-ranked lowest in the country (24%) – resigned in January.
In Alberta, now-former Premier Alison Redford would have ranked lowest this quarter with 23 per cent approval on her job performance. Redford resigned from office March 19. At the time the survey was in field, 36 per cent of Quebecers approved of Premier Pauline Marois’ job performance, up four points over last quarter. However, these results must be measured against the backdrop of the current, rapidly shifting election campaign in Quebec.
BC Premier Christy Clark ranks fourth (38%), followed by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne at 36 per cent. Premiers Greg Selinger in Manitoba and David Alward in New Brunswick each have a 28 per cent approval rating.
