NRGH To Get Two New Operating Theatres

NANAIMO — Work to complete the final two operating theatres within the surgical suite at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) is scheduled to begin this spring following a tendering process in April.

Once complete in late fall, the surgical suite will have a total of 10 operating theatres. NRGH’s current surgical facility opened in 2005 with eight fully equipped operating theatres. Two were shelled in for future development.

The addition of these two operating theatres will enable more efficient scheduling of elective surgical procedures, which will mean improved patient flow by allowing for the majority of procedures to take place between 8 am and 6 pm.

“This investment in surgical facilities at NRGH will contribute to the health and well-being of patients and their families in the region,” said Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health for Healthy Living. “The improved patient flow will also support the important work of the operating room teams.”

Cost of the project is $3 million and will be cost-shared by the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, $1.5 million, Island Health, $900,000 and the Regional Hospital District of Nanaimo, $600,000.

The Foundation kicked off its $1.5 million fundraising campaign today at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

“The Foundation is extremely pleased to partner with the Regional Hospital District and Island Health in order to facilitate the most progressive medical care possible for Central Vancouver Islanders,” said Jim Crist, Chair of the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation Board. “By expanding access to NRGH’s surgical suite we are better able to serve our community’s health care needs. Making a true difference is what inspires our donors to help.”

Maeve O’Byrne, President of the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, said the foundation is proud to serve as a partner in funding the surgical suites expansion by raising $1.5 million – 50 per cent of the project’s cost.

“We believe our donors will rally behind this project because of the significant difference it will make to lives here on the Island, especially in emergency situations,” O’Byrne said.

Nanaimo Regional Hospital District Board Chair Joe Stanhope said the project is welcome news for Nanaimo-area residents.

“The additional theatres will allow surgical teams to meet the needs of patients efficiently and effectively, whether they are scheduled for elective surgery or require emergency care.”

“We deeply value our partnerships with the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District and Foundation,” said Don Hubbard, Island Health Board Chair. “This support is essential for the delivery of excellent health care to the residents of the Central Island and our visitors.”
