147th Empire Days Parade and Celebration

Once again an army of volunteers put together the event which marks the beginning of festival season in Nanaimo. This is perhaps the premiere downtown family, fun event as witnessed by the thousands of people who line the parade route, there is almost no bum-space on the sidewalk from Church Street to Victoria Cres. on parade day.

In addition to the parade which this year had several new entries including Westjet and the Burnaby North Vikings marching band to name just two, Diana Krall Plaza was a hive of family fun as well. There were several food vendors, face painting, balloon artists, stilt-walkers, jugglers, magicians, clowns and a very-fun ride enjoyed by a steady stream of 'kids' of all ages.

I have been taking photos of the parade for five years now, and I think this is one of the best yet, and looked to be as well attended as any I have seen. The fact many shops were open and Diana Krall Plaza gave people something to do, both before and after the parade makes for a very pleasant place to spend much of the day. I am always pleasantly surprised by the number of young families with children seen at this event, which speaks well for the future of Nanaimo.

In the evening downtown was wall-to-wall people who enjoyed the Fireworks over the Harbour show which is the grand finale of a popular Nanaimo tradition.

Kudos and hats off to the many men and women who give freely of so much of their time to make this event the success it has been year after year after year.
