Parksville Restaurant - No Tipping Allowed

http://www.timescolonist.com/business/no-tipping-allowed-at-new-parksville-restaurant-1.1055463

According to this Times Colonist article a restaurant set to open in Parksville this June is adopting a whole new business model which will not allow tipping for service.

Rather than encouraging tipping, the owner has added about 18% to his menu prices which allows him to pay his staff a 'living wage', which will range from $20 - $24/hr for servers and $16 - $18/hr. for cooks. In addition to higher wages, the restaurant owner is also setting aside a portion of sales to cover the cost of providing health and dental benefits.

Tips will be absolutely refused, to the point if one is left and can not be returned it will be donated to charity. Time will tell whether this new model yields the results the owner is looking for as it is considered to be a model unique to this area.

  1. This is.garbage !! the cooks should be getting the 20-25 an hour and the servers 16-18.
Cooking is a skilled trade , serving is not .I would never support a restaurant like this , also I tip based on service and quality of food , so it's a flawed plan. . No cooks no food , good cooks are hard to find , servers can be easily trained

  2. I have no desire to pay 18% more for my meal than what I can pay across the street. What this owner is telling me is an 18% tip is expected and has nothing to do with the service I am provided. The purpose of the tip was to show appreciation for good service given the customer. I would never patronize this restaurant.
