USS Nimitz At Nanoose

USS Nimitz passing Shack Island Photo: Gary Korpan

Looking like a moving island, the USS Nimitz sails past Hammond Bay on it's was to the Naval testing range at Nanoose.

The aircraft carrier arrived in local waters on Tuesday and is scheduled to remain for Wednesday as well. Of course, just exactly what the ship and crew will be doing is not discussed, nor is much disclosed about what the ship is armed with and what exercises they will be engaged in.

There will be other naval vessels deployed to see that other craft do not enter the testing area during exercises.

The USS Nimitz is powered by two nuclear reactors, four steam turbines and four shafts giving the 1092 ft. vessel unlimited distance of travel. Capable of carrying 90 fixed wing and helicopters with a ship's company of 3200 the floating airstrip is a formidable warship.

The fact it belongs to friends is something to be thankful for.
