Sand Sculpture At Woodgrove Centre

LOCAL CHILDREN’S AUTHOR INSPIRES INDOOR SAND SCULPTURE

NANAIMO, BC. International sand sculptor Craig Mutch and team started a literacy inspired sand art masterpiece indoors at Woodgrove Centre the evening of July 2, 2014. Approximately 14 tons of sand and 100 hours of labour are needed to complete the sculpture which is located near the water clock fountain. Completion is expected by July 9, 2014 and the sand sculpture will remain on display until August 6, 2014.

This year’s sculpture brings to life characters from A. B. Sea – A Deep-Sea Symphony, a children’s book by local author and illustrator, Dianna Bonder. Craig Mutch shared, “It is great to be back on Vancouver Island. I’m very inspired and appreciative to be asked to depict some the characters from one of Dianna’s books.” Nola Dunn, Woodgrove Centre’s Marketing Director added, “We wanted to help celebrate the opening of the Nanaimo North Branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library and we are thrilled to have involved both Craig and Dianna in this event. I hope visitors will enjoy how the sand sculpture evolves and discover something new about the display each time they visit.”

Woodgrove Centre will also be hosting a free Summer Reading Event on Saturday, July 5 at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Children are invited to join Dianna Bonder for a reading of A, B, Sea - A Deep-Sea Symphony and illustration demonstration near A Step Ahead.
