Ten High Demand Jobs Next Decade In B.C.

According to the Government of B.C. The following ten jobs are expected to be in the highest demand in British Columbia.

  • Registered and psychiatric nurses 24.660 job openings in next 10 years
  • Transport truck drivers 16.300 job openings in next 10 years
  • Carpenters 13.690 job openings in next 10 years
  • Financial auditors and accountants 13.450 job openings in next 10 years
  • Cooks 10.210 job openings in next 10 years
  • ECC and assistants 9,050 job openings in next 10 years
  • Construction trades helpers and labourers 8,170 job openings in next 10 years
  • Electricians (except industrial and power system) 7,230 job openings in next 10 years
  • Heavy equipment operators (except crane) 6.760 job openings in next 10 years
  • Welders and related machine operators 3,890 job openings in next 10 years

If these estimates are accurate and these are the ten jobs that will be in the highest demand in the coming decade there seems to be a looming shortage of those people that 'get 'er done!'.

As reported in the Globe and Mail within the next two years there will be an invisible shift in the B.C. work force when the pool of younger workers becomes smaller than the number of aging workers who have their eye on retirement.

If the analysts are correct, 2016 is the point when the real trouble starts. There are regions of the province where recruitment and retention is a challenge now - but just wait until the retirement-aged segment of the work force outnumbers new entrants.
