Nanaimo Extreme Weather Shelter Now Open

First Unitarian Fellowship of Nanaimo
Extreme Weather Shelter

Beginning in 2008, men and women without fixed lodging have found shelter in the lower level of our fellowship building at 595 Townsite Rd. This year will be no different. The congregation voted to continue operating a “low barrier” cold-wet Extreme Weather Shelter for 2014-15. For most nights between November and March, the shelter will open at 7 p.m. with twenty-four beds available, along with a hot meal at night, breakfast in the morning, washers and dryers, companionship, and great staff on hand. In addition pets can be accommodated at the site as well as the provision of nightly storage space for our guests’ belongings.

The shelter doors open when the outside temperature is 5 degrees Celsius with rain and wind and 3 degrees Celsius when clear.

Financial support comes from several sources: Municipal, Regional, Provincial, and Federal governments, as well as a variety of generous community donations. This funding has ensured a safe, warm place for our overnight guests.
