Lunar Eclipse Saturday April 4/15 - Nanaimo

The lunar eclipse on Saturday, April 4, 2015 will be visible from Nanaimo providing the weather cooperates.

This eclipse is also referred to as a "Blood Moon" as the moon will appear red from the earth. There is some scriptural significance being given to this event by Biblical scholars who note this unusual event is also occurring during Passover which is celebrated by the Jewish community as well as the Easter weekend which is celebrated by the Christian community.

Adding to the significance of the event is the fact there has been an unusual series of four such blood moons known as the Blood Moon Tetrad (four) occurring in 2014 and 2015 all of which occur on Jewish holy days.

In 2014 there was a Blood Moon on April 15 during Passover and again on October 8 during Sukot. This year there is a Blood Moon on April 4 during Passover and again at the end of September during Sukot. The Blood Moon in September this year is also a super moon, meaning the moon will appear much larger as it's orbit comes closer than usual to the earth.

I will be setting my alarm for 3:30 am Saturday morning, and if we are clouded over, will pull the covers back over my head. If however the sky is clear I hope to witness the event and maybe even get a decent picture, although shooting moons has never been my strong suit.

  2. 'blood moon' is another name for 'hunters moon' which happens in the fall..that is the way the term was usually used, although i see the media has a different view on this since 2010 according to wikipedia..
