Nanaimo Heritage Days Celebration

Nanaimo’s 150+ year old May long weekend celebration targets ownership of the past & future

Nanaimo boasts the oldest, continuous community celebration in the Commonwealth having hosted an annual celebration for over 150 years on the May long weekend. Railroad, Coal, Harbour Connections themes will be evident in the 2015 celebration which will celebrate our great people including our ancestors and the future of our young people.

Community-focused leaders have taken on the leadership of the May long weekend festivities which will include an outdoor festival and fireworks on Saturday 16 May, and a parade and agenda of family-friendly events on Sunday 17 May.

With only a handful weeks of planning time, event organizers are calling on community organizations and event champions to take ownership of the past and celebrate the future at this community-wide celebration. “My goal is to have 100% of Nanaimo citizens aware of or participating in this event, and attract positive economic impact for downtown Nanaimo, “says Angie Barnard, Event Coordinator. Armed with lofty goals and the desire to create an all-ages event to celebrate our community spirit and pride of place, organizers are confident that over time the event will grow to be the signature ‘community pride’ event with growing opportunities for participants, volunteers, donors, presenting partners and local and visiting attendees.

This year’s celebration will be programmed to attract both multi-generational families and those seeking a local getaway offering plenty of great excuses to enjoy the pulse of downtown Nanaimo. Family-friendly must-do activities include a dance party, canon-firing & Bastion opening, downtown Spirit Walks tours. Other highlights include fireworks, local artisans, vendors and musicians; and a kick-off to patio season showcasing unique menu items and local ingredients at select eateries and pubs.

Parade and outdoor festival participants and sponsors are being asked to take ownership of the past and future by signing up now and keeping this age-old celebration alive. More information can be found online on the event website www.nanaimohd.com and on facebook www.facebook.com/nanaimohd.
