Snuneymuxw First Nation seeks public input on Plans for Newcastle Island

Nanaimo, BC – April 8, 2015 - Snuneymuxw First Nation (SFN), BC Parks and the City of Nanaimo are undertaking a business plan to develop cultural opportunities on Newcastle Island. The City, BC Parks and SFN will host an Open House to gather input and ideas for the Island. Residents are encouraged to attend the open house which will take place at Maffeo Sutton Park on Saturday April 18th from 1PM to 4PM.

“Since time immemorial Snuneymuxw First Nation Ancestors’ connection to our traditional lands and water was developed through respect for all living elements. SFN’s connection with Saysutshun (Newcastle Island) is born out of this respect and honour. The leadership of today takes the responsibility to ensure that Snuneymuxw heritage and stewardship is passed onto the following generations to come”. said Newcastle Island Coordinator, Trish Malfair.

Newcastle Island Provincial Park was established in 1961 due to its unique natural, cultural and recreational values. A Collaborative Management Agreement (CMA), dated September 19, 2007 between SFN, the City of Nanaimo and BC Parks identified the commitment to jointly develop and implement the construction of Cultural Facilities.

In October 2013, the Parties were signatories to a Project Charter which provides the terms of reference for a business plan for the development of cultural facilities and educational experiences on Newcastle Island that will fulfill the vision of SFN, BC Parks and the City of Nanaimo.

Preliminary concepts and ideas for Newcastle Island Cultural Facilities will be available for review and comment at the Open House.
