Northfield & Island Highway Intersection Improvements

NEWS RELEASE

Highway 19A/Northfield and Boundary intersection
Upgrades designed to improve traffic safety

Working in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation, the City of Nanaimo has developed a design for roadway improvements with the goal of making the intersection at Highway 19A/Northfield and Boundary safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.  The budget for the project is $3,000,000.  The City of Nanaimo and the Ministry of Transportation have agreed to share the costs of the project 50:50.  ICBC has also indicated they will contribute $95,000 to the project.  Construction is anticipated to start in the Fall of 2015 and be completed by Summer 2016.

The primary objective of the project is to improve the safety of the intersection for all modes of transportation.

"This frequently used intersection has presented safety concerns to Nanaimo’s residents and visitors for years.  The funding being provided by the Province, ICBC and the City to address these concerns will greatly improve the safety for those passing through this intersection by car, truck, bus or bike." - Bill McKay Mayor City of Nanaimo
