Another $50,000 Consultant At Nanaimo City Hall

Competence at City Hall??

Your Mayor has decided to spend $50,000 or more to hire a facilitator to help members of council learn how to get along. Anyone watching city council over the past number of years must wonder what level of competence we have elected and employed to conduct city business.

The focus seems to be on how this city council functions, or doesn't function depending on your point of view. However, it shouldn't go unnoticed that in a very short period of time we have gone through three city managers who must also bear responsibility for how city hall runs and the city of Nanaimo runs.

A common denominator with the three city managers, is that they are all home grown candidates for the job, none of them having competed in an open competition for the top spot at city hall. A fair question is whether or not the most important job at city hall should simply be passed on to the 'next in line' without an external competition. Perhaps some new blood in the city managers office might bring some creative solutions to the problems that seem to have plagued not only this council but the previous one as well.

In round numbers between the Mayor and City Manager Nanaimo taxpayers are paying about $350,000.00/yr. to see our business taken care of. The idea we have to hire someone else for another $50,000 or so begs the question of what managerial skills are being demonstrated by our Mayor and City Manager.

While it seems to have pretty much gone unnoticed over the past few years, there has been quite a number of employees leave city hall. Is that a symptom of an underlying serious issue with upper management at 400 Wallace Street?

  1. Was this consultant hired as a result of a majority vote of council? Does the mayor have discretionary spending powers? If not then does this not demonstrate exactly what the problem is?
