Bridge Failure Closes Trans Canada Highway

Photo: Ashley Littlefied

The bridge which opened in late November is a choke point for the entire Trans Canada Highway. This is one place in Canada where there is only one road and one bridge effectively closing the Trans Canada Highway. The west side of the bridge pulled away from the abutment and lifted up about 60 centimetres.

The community, about 100 kms northeast of Thunder Bay has opened emergency shelters to house stranded motorists and truckers.

Local truck stops are packed as transports are lined up, unable to complete their journey. It is unknown at this time when the bridge may be reopened.
