In light of two recent unsolved sex assaults involving teenage girls, the Nanaimo RCMP is urging the public to use caution. The two reported incidents, on Friday February 12th and Thursday December 3rd, have occurred along a stretch of railway tracks extending from Fifth St to the upper portion of Hecate St.
A description of the suspect is as follows:
- white male, 30's, 5 ft.10
- slim with a reddish beard, much a like a goatee
The following safety messages should be used anytime when walking in secluded areas and particularly along railway tracks:
Use the buddy system and stay alert to anyone approaching, from the front or back
- If using earbuds or headphones, keep the volume down so you can hear sounds and sense movement around you
- If you have a phone, keep it in your hand and be prepared to call for help if necessar
- Avoid walking in secluded areas at night
- If confronted, yell, scream and run
- Report suspicious activity immediately
