Male arrested in connection with suspicious fires

A 54 year old male has been arrested in connection with suspicious fires that occurred at the Cedar Memorial Gardens in Cedar, the A&W Husky on HW 1 and a grader in Ladysmith.

At approximately 10:15 pm on Sunday February 14, officers responded to an initial report of a break and enter to the Cedar Memorial Gardens located at 2347 Cedar Rd. Upon arrival, the building was fully engulfed in flames. Cedar Volunteer fire crews were on scene and eventually contained the fire although there was extensive damage to the building.

While investigating this occurrence, Ladysmith RCMP reported to two suspicious fires: a structure fire reported at 11:20 pm at the A&W Husky on Highway 1, just north of Ladysmith and at 12:20 am, a small fire to a grader located on a property off Breton Page Road. Minimal fire damage was reported at the A&W however, damage to the grader is estimated to be in the range of $28,000. North Oyster fire crews responded to both incidents.

Investigation identified a suspect vehicle which was located a short time later in Cedar. The lone male occupant was arrested without incident and a Judicial Bail hearing will be held later today.
