Call For Mayor McKay's Resignation Explained

(Nanaimo, BC - Wednesday, March 16) - A total of seven Nanaimo City Councillors have released some of the reasons for their calling for the resignation of Mayor Bill McKay, which was discussed at Monday’s March 7th , Committee of the Whole Council meeting.

“The majority of Council is cooperating and working effectively on constructive solutions for the betterment of all of Nanaimo. There are seven Councillors who are enjoying working together and it is most unfortunate that the Mayor has chosen to follow his own agenda, which undermines council as a whole,” stated Councillors Jim Kipp, Bill Bestwick, Jerry Hong, Wendy Pratt, Ian Thorpe, Bill Yoachim and Gord Fuller, all of whom signed a letter requesting the resignation of Mayor McKay for the following reasons:

  • Mayor McKay’s poor attendance at Council meetings. He has attended only 18 meetings out of a total of 29 over the past three months.
  • Mayor McKay has failed to respond to questions posed to him by Council and the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for nearly three months, a requirement under the Community Charter.
  • Mayor McKay made repeated attempts to remove the CAO from her position as interim CAO, including threats to dissolve Council.
  • Mayor McKay has failed to carry forward the wishes of the majority of Council on a number of key issues, thereby undermining the majority Council vote.

I am confident that we are heading in the right direction. Whether the Mayor chooses to be a part of that or not is up to him. Ideally, we want him actively involved in the work of Council moving forward. The longer this impasse goes on the less hopeful we are.” - Councillor Wendy Pratt

  1. These all seem like really good reasons not to have confidence in our mayor so why didn't Councillor Brennan sign the letter?
I think her supporters deserve to know why.
