Chamber Congratulates City's CAO Placement

The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce issued statements from their Board Chair and their CEO regarding the announcement of the permanent placement of CAO Tracy Samra.

Kim Smythe, Chamber President & CEO stated “This is an exciting time for Nanaimo with the appointment of a new CAO from outside the corporation for the first time in decades, the soon to be completed Core Review, and a new Corporate Strategic Plan all arriving at the same time. The Chamber has great optimism for the short and long term.”

David Littlejohn, Board Chair said “We look forward to working with the new management at City Hall and advocating with them and Council with the goal of creating more opportunities for businesses to succeed in Nanaimo.”

Smythe continued “Ms. Samra brings new energy to the corporation and, without the history of years at city hall, also brings fresh perspectives and a new work style.”

The Chamber of Commerce relationship with the City includes advocacy work by the Chamber on behalf of local businesses as well as providing advice and input on various issues at Council and Staff’s request.

  1. Let's hope this signals a change of attitude at the chamber and they will support the MAJORITY of council not the disgruntled whiners.

  2. I also hope there's a change of attitude from C of C and they now realize their complaining .a few months back of a "problem Council"was just cheer leading for a loosing side.
With an unapologetic Council member leaking in-camera meeting info to Facebook friends and questionable Mayor actions, maybe
C of C should focus on these two individuals behavior.
I've witnessed Council meetings in person lately, Ms Samra is a breath of fresh air compared to the previous CAO and it looks like a couple of people are not buying into the current situation?

Congratulations to Ms. Samra! Truly a breath of fresh air. Love your management style. I read the Bulletin interview in todays edition with her and I believe that is the way it should be where the city manager has "access to the people directly managing departments" and "brainstorm together, express ideas and at the same time be directly responsible for what happens in their departments", The staff must be thrilled with such a great boss and a healthy work environment.
