for Inaugural FireSmart
Weekend
Nanaimo Fire Rescue and Vancouver Island
University and are holding its inaugural FireSmart weekend April 9th and 10th at
the VIU campus. With the assistance from FireSmart Canada and grant money from
the UBCM, staff and students of the Universities Forestry program will take part
this weekend in FireSmarting forested areas near campus buildings. The City of
Nanaimo was recently recognized as a Fire Smart Community and this is one
initiative as a result.
All residents can have a FireSmart home and
Nanaimo Fire Rescue wants to encourage all its citizens to participate.
Guidelines are available that can assist property owners in helping them to slow
down or prevent the spread of wildfire on their properties by visiting
fire.nanaimo.ca or www.firesmartcanada.ca In addition,
Nanaimo Fire Rescue can support FireSmart community champions to assist them in
establishing FireSmart programs in their neighbourhoods.
"The
City of Nanaimo is pleased to be a FireSmart Community. The event at VIU this
weekend is a great community partnership and we look forward to working with
their students and staff to FireSmart parts of the high risk areas on their
campus." - Brad Wood Nanaimo
