The above is what happens to a cattail (bulrush) as it opens, when it is not blown about by the wind. We put several of them on our front deck in the spring time as they are quite popular nesting material with our feathered friends. The hummingbirds are usually the first ones seen plucking the downy material to make their nests more comfortable.
