Canada Revenue Agency Scam In Nanaimo

Back taxes scam threatens arrest
not how CRA conducts their business

The local RCMP detachment has been fielding dozens of calls each week from people targeted by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam.

Potential victims will receive a call from someone claiming to be an officer with the CRA. It is obvious the caller is reading from a script informing people they have not paid back taxes owing. The caller then threatens the potential victim that an arrest warrant will be issued if the taxes are not paid immediately.

Nanaimo residents are warned that this is not how the Canada Revenue Agency conducts business and that this is a scam. Your best course of action is to hang up the telephone.

The telephone call can be reported to the Canadian Anti- Fraud centre toll free at 1-888-495-8501 or submitted online .

The golden rule of telephone fraud prevention is to verify all aspects of the solicitation, beginning with the identity of the caller, his or her affiliation to the organization being represented, and their intentions in soliciting via the phone. For more prevention tips and for information about reporting fraudulent incidents, please visit the RCMP website HERE.
