13 Break & Enters As Thieves Target Schools

Ecole Hammond Bay - Morningside Rd.
In the past month 13 break and enters have been committed at local schools, ranging from Ecole North Oyster to Ecole Hammond Bay. John Barsby High School alone has been broken into 4 times. Overall, thieves have made off with computers, projectors, musical equipment and various other small items.
The most recent break in was reported overnight on Thursday June 2, at Ecole Hammond Bay.  At this time, it is unknown if anything was taken. The schools affected are:
Elementary schools - North Oyster, Georgia Ave, Pauline Haarer, Park Ave, Mountain View, Cilaire, Departure Bay, Forest Park, Brechin, Uplands, Hammond Bay
Secondary Schools- John Barsby, Woodlands, Wellington
Many of the break ins have occurred late at night and have involved either a door or window being pried open.  In one break and enter, surveillance video captured an outline of a vehicle and in another, a bicycle but no description could be obtained.
We are asking for the public's assistance in helping us identify those responsible.  Residents living near schools should also be vigilant in reporting any persons or vehicles seen on or near school property late at night, said Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

If you have information on any of these incidents, please call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com, text 274637, keyword Nanaimo or call 1-800-222-8477.
