Thief Wisely Complies When Confronted By Boomer

Commercial break and enter nets 6 month jail term

A 37 year old Nanaimo man has been jailed for 6 months, following a Break and Enter to a local outdoor sporting business.

Nanaimo RCMP was called to Alberni Outpost, located at 3290 Island Highway North at 3:45 am on Sunday February 19, 2017 after an alarm was reported at the business. Constable Clay Wurzinger and his Police Services Dog “Boomer” were first on scene.

When Cst Wurzinger and Boomer arrived they could clearly see a male inside the business in the process of smashing open and knocking over display cases. Cst Wurzinger yelled out to announce his presence but due to the alarm sounding, the male was unaware of his presence. This afforded Wurzinger and Boomer time to approach undetected. Video surveillance later seized from the business showed the male being confronted by Boomer and him instantly throwing his hands into the air and complying with Cst Wurzinger’s demands. With Boomer standing watch, other officers arrested the male without incident and transported him to the Nanaimo RCMP Detachment.

The next day, 37 year old Kevin Lackie of Nanaimo appeared in Nanaimo Provincial Court and entered a guilty plea. "Police Dogs and their handlers are sometimes the first to arrive on active crime scenes. In many situations when thieves come face to face with a Police Services Dog, they will stop in their tracks and wisely submit to being arrested”, said Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

In recent weeks the Nanaimo RCMP have seen a rise in reported commercial break and enters. Having an audible monitored alarm is an excellent deterrent. This and having video surveillance assists officers in identifying those responsible and stopping them before they commit other crimes.

Businesses should ensure the above crime prevention deterrents are in place and working property. Along with these measures, there should be limited or no cash left on premises. Additionally employees tasked with closing should double check to ensure all doors and windows are locked and secured.
