Statement from WHL
Commissioner Ron Robison
Tuesday, March 7,
2017
The WHL remains fully committed
to delivering a WHL franchise to Nanaimo either through relocation or expansion
and will move forward to obtain the necessary final approvals should the
residents of the City of Nanaimo vote in favour of a new Events
Centre.
The WHL has never wavered in
its interest in the Nanaimo market. The WHL believes Nanaimo would be a great
addition to our BC Division as a natural rival with the Victoria Royals and
other Divisional opponents including the Vancouver Giants, Kelowna Rockets,
Kamloops Blazers and the Prince George Cougars.
Under the terms of the
Memorandum of Understanding entered into between the WHL and the City of
Nanaimo, should the City approve the construction of a new Events Centre
facility which meets WHL standards a WHL franchise will enter into a 20-year
lease and begin operating out of the Frank Crane Arena next season. The WHL team
ownership will be of the highest caliber and will include local
investment.
