Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law

Guarantee of Rights

 and Freedoms

1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.

Fundamental Freedoms

2, Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: (a) freedom of conscience and religion; (b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; (c) freedom of peaceful assembly;and (d) freedom of association.

HOW IT APPLIES IN THIS DAY AND AGE

While considering the preamble of the Charter I found I was having great difficulty defining how those five simple words are being applied in our Canada today.Those five simple words; 'recognize the supremacy of God'.

When we say we recognize the supremacy of God how does that apply in how we conduct our lives? How does it impact the laws of  the land being crafted in our seats of government? How does it apply in our education system where young minds are being molded to be the guardians of tomorrow? How does it apply in all our dealings with each other? How does it apply in how we approach life itself? How does it apply in our caring and love for each other as human beings first, divorced from race, creed or color?

When we say we recognize the supremacy of God on a fundamental level we must view life, our very existence as being sacred, holy and precious. We must apply the same view to all of creation, when we recognize the supremacy of God.

When our leaders and law makers recognize the supremacy of God, they must make their decisions based on the knowledge they will ultimately stand accountable to God for what they have done.

How do we recognize the supremacy of God within our whole educational system? How is God acknowledged and given credit for our very lives and this home he has given to us?

How do we honor God's supremacy in our dealings one with another? Are we truthful with one another? When we make a promise or give our word, do we honor that commitment or do we look for ways 'to get out of' the promises we have made. How do we now approach the covenant of marriage? Is it actually a covenant we make before the God whose supremacy we recognize? Or just another contract with escape clauses built into it? 

Do we really believe that God is Supreme and that everything flows from Him including our very next breath? Do we really believe that God can roll up the entire universe with nothing more than the power of His Word?

To our shame have we allowed whole generations to be born and raised in this nation without ever instilling in them the supremacy of God in our own lives and in our very nation?

Have we allowed Darwinian fables to replace the truth of Holy Scripture? Have we allowed those generations to believe they are nothing more than random accidents and their future has no more hope or purpose than simply going back into the nothingness they emerged from? 

Have they been taught that life is nothing more than the result of a physical act that can be terminated on a whim? How is the supremacy of God being honored in our very approach to life itself?

We have decided that on the very issue of life itself God is not supreme and life can be thrown away as something of no real value.

Without a deep seated knowing that God is in fact Supreme, life becomes a meaningless exercise that is made tolerable through self medicating and pursuing whatever pleasure we think might satisfy.

It is said that within the heart of every person there is a God-shaped hole which only He can fill. Sadly it would appear in Canada we have decided we can fill that hole with everything but God.

When we say we recognize the supremacy of God we have to be clear as to which God we are referring. There are many gods in the world, not the least of which is man himself. 

We have freedom of religion in the Charter and so we should have. The war between the Catholics and Protestants should not be decided by the government of the land. However the supremacy of the God of the Holy Scripture is a fact that all levels of government in our nation needs to honor. We were in fact a Christian nation recognizing the Supremacy of Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of the Living God.

If our Charter is to actually mean anything it must once again take seriously the supremacy of God in our nation. A quick look around the planet and what happens to nations that do not make Christ their Supreme God should shake us out of our slumber.
