THINGS TO DO IN NANAIMO THIS WEEKEND

THE LAST WEEKEND OF 'SUMMER' ENJOY IT

As the last weekend of summer before the kids are back in school, the weatherman looks like he will remain consistent to his usual plans. Don't let that dull your weekend as there are still many enjoyable things to do.

The Farmers Market is open on Friday from 10:00am - 2:00pm in the plaza beside the Bastion right downtown. Fresh produce, baking and much more make this a popular weekly event. While you are there be sure to take in the cannon firing and take advantage of a last trip through the Bastion. If you have not seen the museum lately be sure to put them on your 'to do' list as well.

A stroll along the seawall taking in the ever-changing waterfront is always a relaxing and pleasant way to spend an hour or two. While at Maffeo Sutton Park, you could hop the harbout ferry for a 45 minute harbour tour, or take the same ferry and visit Newcastle Island.

Westwood Lake and Long Lake are still good bets for freshwater swimming, with Departure Bay and Pipers Lagoon providing a saltwater alternative.

There is the last Free Dance in the Park this Friday Aug. 31 at the Lions Pavilion in Maffeo Sutton Park. More details are available by clicking here.

Sat. Sept. 1, is the 10th annual Cans Food Festival hosted by the Old City Quarter merchants. This worthwhile event helps the Loaves and Fishes Food Bank. You donation of 2 cans of food, or 2 non-perishable food items will get you a 'taste' of food from the participating restaurants. Food is also available for $1.00 per taste. Proceeds go to a worthy local cause, so be sure to get out and support it. The Old City Quarter is on Fitzwilliam Street, with the most obvious landmark being St. Andrews United Church.

Have a great weekend and let's hope the weathman got the forecast wrong!

St. ANDREW'S UNITED CHURCH REPAIRS

114 YEAR OLD CHURCH GETS FRESH PAINT

Perched high atop a scissor lift platform, a painter applies fresh paint to the aging church at the corner of Fitzwilliam St. and Wesley St., in the Old City Quarter.

This church, popular for it's architecture and acoustics is the benefactor of $40,000 in grant money, with equal grants coming from the City of Nanaimo, and the BC Heritage Fund.

It is estimated it would take two million dollars to restore the building to it's former glory. Any help from the community would be greatly appreciated.

This project which has seen repairs to rotting window sills and new paint will be complete in another two or three weeks.

NANAIMO TRAIN STATION FIRE UPDATE

NANAIMO E&N TRAIN STATION FIRE IS ARSON

The fire which caused serious damage to the historic Nanaimo railway station has been labeled arson by local officials, and the RCMP are now engaged in a criminal investigation.

A spokesman for Island Corridor Foundation said he was uncertain if the building was insured against such loss. The Foundation assumed control of the station from Via rail some time ago.

Earlier this month I reported on this blog, the run down state of this station, to the extent that weeds were even overgrowing the sidewalk. It simply appeared to be an open, but abandoned building.

In my opinion, it would not have taken anymore than a week of good old elbow grease, many gallons of paint, and the old station could have been spruced up considerably.

I think it rather odd, that a foundation responsible for running a railroad, would not have adopted a policy whereby all of it's assets would be properly insured.

As I asked earlier 'is this anyway to run a railroad?'. If you are wondering what I mean, try and find out when the train runs, how much a ticket costs and where you are to catch a train now that the station is being fenced off.

Perhaps this particular rail line, is just a dinosaur whose only real value lies in the property it controls, and not the rail service it provides. No one seems to be able to make it a viable operation. Frankly, there is no real effort to attempt to get more people using the service.

E&N TRAIN STATION BURNS IN NANAIMO

FIRE DESTROYS HISTORIC
NANAIMO TRAIN STATION

Early Sunday morning a suspicious fire tore through the 87 year old E&N rail station on Selby Street.
The bottom two pictures show the rail side of the building before and after, while the top picture shows the Selby Street side of the building.
According to the local daily newspaper, it is unknown if the building is properly insured by the new owners.
The site has been in the news recently (and in this blog) with concerns over the general run down condition of the building and grounds. No one had even bothered to take the time to pull weeds growing out of the sidewalk in front of the entrance.
As recently as last Thursday I noticed the weeds had been pulled but the landscaping near the sign was still heavily overgrown with blackberries and weeds. It just looks like no one really cares at all.
If the current owners did not think enough of the building to have it properly insured you might wonder 'is this anyway to run a railroad?'.
Apparently there was no public money available to spruce up the aging station. Perhaps it should have been included with the referendum to build the new convention centre. Tacking on another million or so would hardly be noticed.
It will be interesting to see what shakes out over the next little while. If insurance will cover reconstruction that will be good. Although it will never be quite the same as the original structure, which held so much potential.
We are not making historic buildings anymore.

Saturday offers several great choices beginning with the Food Share Fun Fair being held at their property at 271 Pine Street. There will be fun stuff for kids of all ages, with a clown, face painting, dunk tank and lots of other fun stuff for all. Come and help them continue their good work in Nanaimo. The fun fair is from 11:00am - 4:pm Aug. 25.

There are free concerts on Saturday and Sunday, and you can see their full schedule by clicking here, Nanaimo Blues Festival.
Sometime earlier this year, I made a note there would be another Show'nShine Car Show downtown this coming Sunday Aug. 26. However, I have not been able to confirm this for a certainty, so you if go downtown and it is not there, I am sorry. If you don't go and it is there, I am still sorry.
This is just about the last summer weekend (if you can call what we have had summer :^). So be sure to check out the Farmers Market on Friday beside the Bastion. Stop in and actually see inside the Bastion, see the Cannon Firing at noon, check out the Museum and all the activities along our great waterfront.
Be sure to hit the lakes for a end of the summer swim if freshwater is your choice, or one of our great ocean front beaches if the salt chuck is your preference.
Just be sure to get out and have a GREAT WEEKEND, as it looks like it will actually be a dry and sunny one.

NANAIMO SKATEBOARDING PARK

THE SUN SHINES ON PIONEER SKATEPARK

The 12000 square foot skatepark on Dover Road at Pioneer Park finally saw some sunshine, to the delight of these happy skateboarders.
To an old guy like myself, I had to admire the determination of practicing tricks, which result in kissing the concrete, again and again until gotten right!
You will find an open ended bowl, hubbas, rainbow railing, ramp to ramp with boxes, and washrooms.
Washrooms, was the only one of there terms I understood........but I am sure skateboarders, know exactly what it means.
If you are not familiar with the location, it is on Dover Road at Pioneer Park, behind the Canadian Tire Store in north Nanaimo.

JUNK FOOD IS NOT REALLY CONVENIENT

Junk Food Is Not
Easier To Eat

by: Dr. Jamie Fettig

There is something to be said about fast food being more convenient then healthy food that helps you be thin. I will give you that. But wait, how about this. Convenient when? It is definitely convenient now. How about later, when you don't have enough energy to do anything but go to sleep? Or when you cannot focus because all you feel like doing is taking a nap. Or is it more convenient when you have indigestion and heartburn and don't feel like doing anything?

We live in a world of now. A world of cause and effect. But the problem is that most people only look at immediate cause and immediate effect. Not fully realizing the body does not work on an instantaneous process. If you put something in your mouth, it can take hours to process the food, even days if your system is not working so good. So when people get heart burn, or are tired, or get headaches they often miss the fact that it may have been something other than what happened immediately before.

You cannot "save time". You can only spend it wisely. And no matter how convenient it may seem at the time, food that is "fast" never saves you time in the long run. This is also a little trick that is interesting and works everywhere in your life. The solution to why it seems like there is never "enough time." It is because we falsely believe we are doing things that save time. Almost everything you do to "save time" only ends up costing you more time. If you eat fast food because you are in a rush, you will lose at least double the time later you supposedly saved.

How much time is wasted because you have no energy to do what you want at the end of the day? How much time is wasted because you don't feel like doing anything? How much time do you spend not feeling ready to go? How much time do you spend being unproductive because of brain fog? These are the type of things that your body does when you eat fast food to "save time". And these are only the semi-immediate effects. Later in life your body starts doing all kinds of things that slow you down and don't allow you to do everything you want. This is in a large part due to what you put into your body. Because as you remember, if you try and build a brick house with rocks and stones, sooner or later it will fall apart.

WHAT TO DO IN NANAIMO THIS WEEKEND

LOOK FOR A SILVER LINING
BUT TAKE YOUR UMBRELLA ANYWAY!

If the weather man is right there will be liquid sunshine likely this coming weekend. It would seem he is much more accurate predicting rain than he is sunshine, so be sure to take your umbrella.

I am sure the organizers of the Vancouver Island Exhibition hope the weatherman is wrong, as the big fair opens this Friday and continues Saturday and Sunday. For more details click V.I.E.X. here. For the V.I.E.X. entertainment line up click here.

The organizers of the Nanaimo Blues Festival will also be hoping for dry weather, as their festival kicks off Fri. at 3:00pm a the the Harbourfront Plaza on Commerical Street. This is in front of the library, if you are unfamiliar. For festival schedule information click Nanaimo Blues Festival info here. (You will need a pdf reader)

Rain or shine won't affect the Glad and Dahlia Society's big show at Country Club Mall. The show is on Saturday 9:30 am - 5:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. You will have the opportunity to purchase some show stoppers at the end of the show.

Even without these great events, there is always something fun to do in Nanaimo on any weekend if you think about it. A few idea starters would be, Farmer's Market on Friday by the Bastion from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Tour the Bastion, and witness the noon cannon firing, check out the Museum while you are right downtown.

Stroll along the waterfront starting at the boat basin by the Bastion and follow it all the way to the Yacht Club and beyond. There is always something of interest on the ever changing waterfront. Start at the basin, stroll past the floating restaurants, unique shops, Swy-a-lana Lagoon and Maffeo Sutton Park. You can grab a Harbour Ferry from Maffeo Sutton Park and tour the Harbour or go over to Newcastle Island.

While you are at Maffeo Sutton Park, you can pick up a bite from one of the vendors, watch a pick up basketball game or what have you. Then along over the Lions Bridge, over the Millstone River and along to the Yacht club and beyond.

Don't forget the acres and acres of great parks Nanaimo has to offer including freshwater swimming at several popular spots. Westwood Lake, Coliery Dam, and Long Lake being among the most popular. If lake or ocean swimming is not your thing, there is also the pools at Beban, Bowen and the Aquatic Centre on Third St. For City pool swimming information click Swimming Info here.

Have a great weekend, even if the weatherman is right, and of course you can always hope he is wrong, and that we have a lovely warm, dry weekend. But just in case, take the umbrella!

SUMMERS BLACKBERRY BOUNTY

TIME FOR SOME
DELICIOUS BLACKBERRIES
With the few days of wet weather and now a few more of sunshine, the local blackberries should be bursting with flavour. While not always growing exactly where you want them, they are a hardy local bush, which produces an abundance of fruit this time of year. If you are looking for something a little different to do, grab a few pails and the kids, and search the highways and biways for some of this summers bounty. If enough actually make it home, they make a great jam or cobbler, and they also freeze very well. Be sure to get your share of Nanaimo's summer crop.

DEPARTURE BAY BEACH NANAIMO

YOUR OWN PRIVATE WATERFRONT FOR FREE

This was the scene at Departure Bay Beach last Saturday during the long weekend at about 2:00pm.
As you can see you would practically have the whole beach to yourself with less than 20 people present.
So, why do you think that is the case? The city has spent considerable money installing nice new crosswalks complete with areas to be planted. It does of course, burn up about 12 parking spaces, but that was hardly the problem this day.
Is it because there are no lifeguards on duty? Is it because it is saltwater and more people prefer fresh?
Is it because there is very little sandy areas? Or is it simply because everyone in Nanaimo, this fine day, had left town?
If you have any ideas how to encourage people to make better use of this great facility, drop us a line at admin@nanaimo-info.com.
Let us know if you make use of the beach, and if so, why, and if not, why not.

EMERGENCY PREPARATION PLAN FOR YOUR FAMILY

Be Prepared for Emergencies

Preparing yourself and your family for emergencies is a smart idea that could save lives. Knowing safe food handling practices is an important part of emergency preparedness that can prevent foodborne illnesses in the event of natural disasters, accidents or intentional incidents.

Get to know the risks of natural occurrence in your area that could become emergencies, such as winter storms and other winter hazards, tornadoes, earthquakes or landslides, power outages, floods and large-scale accidents such as chemical spills. Unfortunately, no country is immune to terrorism. Be aware of the dangers that could be presented by an intentional act and listen to the guidance from official authorities.

Make a Plan and Prepare a Kit

Formulate an emergency plan for your household and prepare an emergency kit for your home and your vehicle. Remember that in the event of a disaster or incident it may take emergency workers up to three days to reach you. Proper food handling and preparation is always important in preventing foodborne illness, yet food supplies may become contaminated, damaged or spoiled in an emergency situation.

An emergency kit should contain a three-day supply of drinking water: four litres per person, per day for drinking, cooking and cleaning. A three-day supply of non-perishable food in hermetically sealed containers with proper equipment and utensils should also be included in your emergency kit. Items that could be included in your kit, along with the food, are can and bottle openers, dishes and utensils, disinfectant soap and bleach, a portable cooking stove with adequate fuel, matches, leather gloves for handling hot material and a folding saw or axe in the event there is firewood available for warmth and cooking. Source: Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Emergency Preparedness Kit (Adult, 3-day)

An Emergency Preparedness, Adult 3-day, is a complete kit, sufficient for one person, to provide essential items an adult will need for at least three days after a disaster and is intended for storage at home, and to be used at home or in a place where someone may go if local authorities ask for an evacuation.

Intended Use of the Items in an Emergency Preparedness Kit

Flashlight

Use the flashlight to find your way if the power is out. Do not use candles or any other open flame for emergency lighting.

Battery-powered Radio

News about the emergency may change rapidly as events unfold. You also will be concerned about family and friends in the area. Radio reports will give information about the areas most affected.

Plastic Sheeting and Duct Tape (Adult, 3-day only)

Use the plastic sheeting and duct tape for sheltering-in-place verses evacuation.

Food

Enough non-perishable food to sustain you for at least one day (three meals) if close to a workplace with stored food or three day supply if at home or other location, is suggested. Select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking, and little or no water. The following items are suggested:

Ready-to-eat canned meals, meats, fruits, and vegetables;

Canned juices; and

High-energy foods (granola bars, energy bars, etc.).

Water

Keep at least one gallon of water available, or more if you are on medications that require water or that increase thirst. Store water in plastic containers such as soft drink bottles. Avoid using containers that will decompose or break, such as milk cartons or glass bottles.

Medications

Include usual non-prescription medications that you take, including pain relievers, stomach remedies, etc. If you use prescription medications, keep at least three-day's supply of these medications at your workplace. Consult with your physician or pharmacist how these medications should be stored, and your employer about storage concerns.

First Aid Supplies

Absorbent Compress 5x9 Dressing
Adhesive Bandages (Assorted Sizes)
Adhesive Cloth Tape 5 yds/1"
Antibiotic Ointment Packets (approx 1g)
Antiseptic Wipe Packets
Packets of Aspirin (162mg)
Pair of Non-Latex Gloves (Size Large)
Scissors
Roller Bandage 3"
Sterile Gauze Pads 3x3
First Aid Instruction Information

Additional Tools and Supplies to Include in Your Emergency Preparedness Kit (1-or 3-day)

Paper plates and cups, plastic utensils
Non-electric can opener
Personal hygiene items, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, brush, soap, contact lens supplies, and feminine supplies
Plastic garbage bags, ties (for personal sanitation uses)
Include at least one complete change of clothing and footwear, including a long sleeved shirt and long pants, as well as closed-toed shoes or boots
If you wear glasses, keep an extra pair with your workplace disaster supplies.

General Information

Your kit should be adjusted based on your own personal needs.Do not include candles, weapons, toxic chemicals, or controlled drugs unless prescribed by a physician. Source: American Red Cross

BRECHIN UNITED CHURCH GETS NEW ROOF

NOT YOUR AVERAGE ROOFING JOB!
Crews from Roofco roofing company are busy at work putting a new roof on Brechin United Church. According to Pastor John van Ome this is the second re-roof the building has had since it was built in 1958. The two previous roofs were cedar shake but the new replacement is a 40 year asphalt shingle roof. Special detail around the buildings dormers present some challenges. The steepness of the roof and sheer size of the job is quite an undertaking. The congregation has already raised approximately 1/3 of the total $70,000 cost of this major project. WHAT TO DO IN NANAIMO THIS WEEKEND

ENJOY NANAIMO'S WATERFRONT

For completely free admission, you can't beat a stroll along Nanaimo's waterfront. You can park by the Yacht club (sometimes) and stroll along the waterfront from there all the way downtown to Cameron Island.
Along the way you will go through Maffeo Sutton Park, home of the Lion's Pavilion, Swy-a-lana Lagoon/Park, where you can cool your feet in the water, or let the kids have some summer fun.
From here you can take in a scenic 45 minute waterfront harbour or take a trip over to Newcastle Island, for the day or just an hour or two. When was the last time you saw the Harbour City of Nanaimo from the water?
Then continue along the walkway and just enjoy, the always changing waterfront.
You'll find lots of places to grab a bite and little shops of interest. Bring along the camera, you never know what you might see.
Be sure to put a visit to one of Nanaimo's excellent parks on your 'to do' list, there is good fresh water swimming if the ocean does not appeal. Westwood Lake, Long Lake and Coliery Dam are all good choices for freshwater swimming. I think only Westwood has a lifeguard, so keep an eye on the kids!
For just a nice oceanside walk with nature, Pipers Lagoon can't be beat, with it's oceanside beach, to it's Gary Oaks and the lagoon itself. You can also view scenic shack island from the park. Be sure to put it on your list, you won't be disappointed.

SOME EVENTS TO TAKE IN

Friday there is the Farmer's Market beside the Bastion from 10:00am - 2:00pm, with over 50 vendors selling fresh baking and produce, eggs and dairy, and all manner of crafts. While you are there take in the cannon firing at noon beside the Bastion.
Since, you are in the neighbourhood, be sure to take a trip through the Bastion and then perhaps carry on to the Nanaimo Museum to check out their latest exhibits.
In the evening there is the free dance in the park at the Lion's Pavilion. For more information go here.
On Saturday and Sunday, there is Art in the Park in McGregor Park, right across from the Port Theatre.

FRONT STREET CONDO TAKES SHAPE

HOW DO THEY DO THAT??
Seemingly suspended in mid air, a large hopper of ready mix cement is on it's way to the top floor of the new condo on Front Street. On the site of the old Malaspina Hotel, once 'going to be a convention center' site; the new waterfront condos are shaping up on the Front Street side. The water side units are well on their way to completion, an expected occupancy date is not known as of this post.

IS THIS ANY WAY TO RUN A RAILROAD?

WEEDS ARE OVERRUNNING THE PLACE
The E and N Rail Station on Selby Street looks as if it has been deserted. Weeds fill the landscaping along the sidewalk, and nearly cover the sign on the street as well as the sidewalk right next to the building. It also looks as if it has not seen paint or even the very basic maintenance to keep the building in good shape, in a good long time. This is an historic old building and certainly deserves better care than it is getting. I contacted the company which purchased the rail line but have heard nothing from them. They don't seem to be going out of their way to attract new business.

PETS ARE GOOD FOR YOU......

Surprising Health Benefits for Pet Owners

by: Patricia Wagner

Did you know that there are key health benefits that can result from owning a pet? Having one can enhance your physical, mental and social wellbeing.

1. How can a pet help your physical health?

Owning a dog, for instance, will encourage you to get more exercise. With your faithful friend at your side, you're much more likely to go for a walk. Walking is one of the best health activities you can do. While walking you're also more likely to socially interact with your neighbors because your special pal often acts as an ice-breaker.

Research led by Dr. Karen Allen at the State University of New York at Buffalo shows that pets can help lower blood pressure. Stockbrokers with high blood pressure were studied to see what happened when they adopted a pet dog or cat. Researchers concluded that having a pet nearby helps control increases in blood pressure due to stress.

In his studies Alan Beck, ScD (Professor of Animal Ecology, Purdue University) found that the simple act of petting your dog slows your heart rate and causes your blood pressure to drop.

An added health advantage from pet ownership is that patients may live longer after heart attacks. Some doctors recommend that a heart attack survivor adopt a dog because research has shown that a faithful canine companion can help prolong an owner's life.

2. How Can A Pet Improve Your Mental Health?

Sharing your life with a cat may help your mental health. A study conducted at Australia's University of New England found that people who own feline friends may experience fewer psychiatric disturbances than those without cats.

Pets can help their owners overcome depression through their companionship and unconditional love. They seem to possess the natural ability to help you relax and enjoy life more.

Pets can also help when you experience times of loneliness. English poet, Alexander Pope, has stated that histories are fuller of examples of the fidelity of dogs than of friends. According to a Chinese proverb, dogs have so many friends because they wag their tails, not their tongues.

When you take care of a pet you have to develop a routine of getting out, buying food and providing exercise. This can help fight off depression and loneliness. The simple responsibility of pet care can help you get your mind off yourself and your problems.

3. How can a pet enhance your wellbeing in the area of relationships?

American Animal Hospital Association President, Link Wellborn, believes that pets are more than just a member of the family - they're central to a healthy lifestyle.

Pets help lessen tension between family members and add a lot of fun and unconditional love to the homes where they live. When pets do cute and funny things - which they often do - family members react by laughing and being more relaxed.

If you don't have a pet yet, consider making one part of your family, but make sure you have the time and resources necessary to provide a stable loving home for your new friend.

If you choose a dog as your new pal, remember this wise old saying. "A dog is man's best friend." That's true in more ways than one. You'll get unconditional love, companionship, loyalty and relaxation in return for your investment of time and material resources.

What a bargain!
