Nanaimo News Notes May 13. 2011

Astronomy Day: presentations by the Nanaimo Astronomy Society on Saturday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm at the Harbourfront Library downtown.

VI Raiders: will begin spring training this weekend at NDSS. In addition to regular coaching staff there will be six BC Lions professionals on hand as guest coaches. Friday night practice at 6:00pm at NDSS and an intersquad game at 1:30 pm on Sunday which is also at NDSS. Regular season play starts against Langely at the end of July.

Lake Cleanup: Sink or Swim Scuba owners organized a beach cleanup at Brannen Lake and within half an hour had nearly filled a dumpster with trash that has been thrown into the lake. Lots of bottles and cans, tires, lawn chair, old computer, golf clubs, just to name some of the items people have mindlessly thrown into the lake rather than using proper disposal methods. Kudos to Sink or Swim for their efforts to keep one lake clean.

Loaves & Fishes: Food bank have opened a location in the Cedar area to help people there with the struggles of keeping family fed during the current economic times. The Cedar location is at the St. Philip's Anglican Church in Cedar where they are open from 2:00 - 3:00 pm on Wednesdays. This week they helped 29 adults and their children with their food needs.

Police Officer Assaulted: a 13 year veteran of the RCMP had to call for backup after she had responded to a call to the Casino at 620 Terminal Avenue. The 29 year old male victim she was there to help, suddenly turned on the officer and began to punch her and try and take her gun from it's holster. A passerby called 911 and fellow officers quickly arrived and took the assailant into custody. The officer was treated at NRGH and released.

Five Homeless: after a house fire burned a small Nicol Street bungalow. The couple living upstairs and a mother and two children living downstairs were not injured in the event, but will be in need of alternate shelter as major repairs are required to restore the house to a livable condition.

Dover Bay School: put in a respectable showing in the recent Fraser Institute annual rankings of BC Schools. Dover Bay ranked 50 out of 274 provincial secondary school, while all other Nanaimo schools ranked quite poorly.

Islandnet: 5,000 website customers of Islandnet.com were affected by a denial of service attack against them perpetrated by an unknown source. It meant a disruption of service to anyone with a website hosted by the Island company. Some well known users of the web host include Thrifty Foods, C-FAX 1070, Belfry Theatre and Robbins Parking to name a few. The company took down a website, the attacker claimed they objected to, and the denial of service attack seems to have stopped. Police are likely going to be asked to investigate.
