Recently officials from the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce and the Suzhou Commercial Associaton of Canada signed an agreement that should build business relationships between Nanaimo and Suzhou.

Sasha Angus of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corp. described the agreement as calling on both parties to promote business exchanges which would include connecting local businesses with their counterparts in Suzhou. The purpose of the relationship would also raise awareness about business and investment opportunities in each community. Angus further explained there is strong interest from a number of their companies about investing in our market as well as sourcing products from Nanaimo for sale in China.

 

Suzhou is located the southeast province in Eastern China and was founded in 514BC with 2500 years of rich history. It boasts a population of nearly 11,000,000 in 2010 and is noted for canals, stone bridges, pagodas and meticulously designed gardens.

 

Suzhou's economy is based primarily on its large manufacturing sector—China's second largest—including iron and steel, IT and electronic equipment, and textile products.  The Suzhou New District was established in 1990. In November 1992, the zone was approved to be the national-level hi-tech industrial zone. By the end of 2007, foreign-invested companies had a registered capital worth of US$13 billion. SND hosts now more than 1,500 foreign companies. Some 40 Fortune 500 companies set up 67 projects in the district.
