Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island Welcomes
Applications for Two New Partner Families
Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver
Island (HFHMVI) is pleased to announce that the application process to select
the next two partner families is now open.
The two families selected will take possession of new houses located at
2360 Extension Road, Nanaimo.
The two
new houses being constructed is a three bedroom house and a two bedroom,
handicap accessible house, suitably-sized families for these two houses will be
considered for this round of applications.
The mandate
of HFHMVI is to build affordable housing for low income families. Habitat homes are sold to partner families at
current market value, with special provisions including no down payment and an
interest free mortgage. This model allows families who wouldn’t otherwise be
able to qualify for a conventional mortgage to become home owners. HFHMVI does not give away houses.
“We are
excited to begin the selection process to find our next two Habitat partner
families,” says Rob Hallam, Executive Director for HFHMVI. “This is an incredible opportunity for a
family to realize the dream of becoming a home owner. We have a rigorous and fair process to
determine the appropriate families for the new houses. A Family Selection committee reviews the initial
applications and identifies a short-list of potential new home owners. Following this, selected families have a more
detailed review including an in-home interview and then the committee’s
recommendations are presented to the Board of Directors for final approval.”
To become a
partner family, applicants must demonstrate need showing that their current
housing is inadequate and/or too expensive.
Secondly, they must show steady employment and the ability to pay for
the interest free mortgage. In addition,
the families must have a willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity. Each family is required to contribute 500
hours of sweat equity. For a family to
be considered, the gross income for a family of four or more must fall between
$37,000 and $55,000.
The
deadline for the receipt of applications is Monday, March 6, 2017; 4:00 pm.
Interested families are encouraged to visit the HFHMVI website – www.habitatmvi.org for additional information and an application form.
