Nanaimo Students Use Pot In School

One in Four Students Report
Using Marijuana in School

In what seems almost unbelievable a recent study shows one in four high school students in Nanaimo report using pot in school. 21% report using alcohol while in school also.

The findings reported in the local press say that the Safe School Survey conducted in Feb. 2007 came up with the alarming statistics. The survey included almost 5,000 students from grade 8 - 12.

While 25% reported using pot in school 40% said they used in the community and 72% said they consumed alcohol in the community.

The survey developed by the institute for Safe Schools of B.C. is supposed to help educators come up with prevention programs for the future.

Editor Comment: I thought schools were supposed to be 'smoke free', but if 1 - 4 students are toking at school it would seem kinda obvious that the smoke free rule is not being obeyed don't you think? If these numbers are even close to correct you have to wonder what the guardians of our youth are doing about the problem.
