Ice Dance Competitors Perform At Woodgrove Mall

On February 10, Vancouver Island’s largest shopping centre, Woodgrove Centre in Nanaimo will open the doors to a new indoor skating rink. From February 10 until April 1, 2018, guests can enjoy the unique experience of skating on synthetic ice. All proceeds will go to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre (NCDC), which has a 50-year history of empowering children in the community with special needs.

“This partnership with Woodgrove Centre on their new rink fits in so well with everything we promote here at the Centre – staying active, spending time with family and friends and having fun,” said Scott Bradford, Executive Director, Nanaimo Child Development Centre. “Woodgrove has supported the Nanaimo Child Development Centre since 1981, raising more than $500,000 in donations.”

Opening weekend celebrations on February 10 and 11 will feature performances by B.C. Ice Dance competitors Sarah Arnold and Thomas Williams. A 6’ faux-ice maple leaf next to the rink will provide patrons with an ideal spot to take selfies to show their support for Canadian athletes at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Free Blenz hot chocolate for everyone while quantities last and red Hudson’s Bay mittens for the first 50 skaters will round out the all-Canadian experience. Public skating will begin after the Ice Dance performances on opening weekend.

Joining in the festivities, The Nanaimo Clippers will lace up on Family Day, Monday, February 12 from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. for skating and an autograph session.

Stolen Audi Possibly Tied To Murder

The Nanaimo RCMP are seeking information in regards to a silver 2002 Audi S6 station wagon which is believed to have been used in the targeted shooting death, that occurred in Nanaimo on Saturday January 13. The vehicle shown in the attached stock photo, was reported stolen from the lower mainland, and sometime between January 3 and January 12, 2018, it was driven to Vancouver Island onboard a BC Ferry. 

Police investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who may recall seeing this vehicle, or its occupants. Alert Sets Off Panic In Hawaii

For unknown reasons the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency  released an official warning of an impending missile strike on the Island.

A follow up alert advising the first warning was in error was not issued until about 40 minutes later.

During those forty minutes it is reported people scrambled about in a state of terror and confusion as highways were plugged with people trying to get to shelters. Some abandoned their cars on the highway and took shelter in tunnels under the roadway.

Whether there are any atheists in nuclear shelters is a question worth asking.

The Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a shooting which has claimed the life of an adult male. The deceased was found at approximately 10:50 am on Saturday January 13, 2018 in the parking lot of an apartment complex, located at the intersection of Wakesiah Ave and Second St. 

Targeted shooting 

The identity of the deceased will not be released until next of kin are notified. The deceased is known to police and the shooting appears to be a targeted incident. Police are also investigating a vehicle fire reported shortly after the incident which may be related to the shooting.  

No further information will be released at this time.

Winchester Ave Senior Fends Off Intruder

Second incident in three days

At approximately 8 pm on Monday January 8, 2018, a senior, in her late 70's, was confronted by a masked man in her home demanding her purse and wallet. The female home owner fought back and the intruder left empty handed.

The female told police she had momentarily stepped outside to close the front gate to her Winchester Ave home and when she returned, was confronted by the male wearing a balaclava covering most of his face. The suspect pushed her into the nearest bedroom and demanded her purse. She refused to hand it over and pushed back.  After more pushing and yelling she ran to her neighbours and called 911. 

Officers, along with Police Dog Services, were on scene within 4 minutes but were unable to locate the suspect.   "She had some bumps and bruises but given what she had been through,  she was no worse for wear, " said Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP. The Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services have reached out to the senior and are assisting her.

This is the second incident in the past week at this residence.  On Saturday January 6 the home owner called police to report her jewellery box had been moved from her bedside table and found in an other room. The box had been emptied of its contents, and missing are three rings, including her wedding rings, some cash and her debit card. No suspects have been identified in this incident.

The suspect in this latest incident was wearing a dark coloured balaclava and is approximately 5 ft. 5 with a slim build and wearing dark clothing. Nicole Reedel Missing Since Dec. 24

The Nanaimo RCMP seeks the public's assistance to locate Nicole Kristin REEDEL, age 30 of Nanaimo, who was reported missing on December 24, 2017. 

REEDEL is normally very active on social media and but has not posted anything since December 25. REEDEL has some personal issues however she did not give any indication she would be leaving Nanaimo, and as a result of this and other factors, her disappearance is totally out of character and troubling for her friends and family. REEDEL does not have access to a motor vehicle and has limited funds. She has family who reside on the Sunshine Coast but she has not reached out to them.

REEDEL is a white female, 5 ft. 9 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. If you have information on the whereabouts of Nicole Kristin REEDEL, please call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
