LOVELY WEATHER HERE AT LAST....

BANNERS AT THE BAY

While summer in Nanaimo is still officially three weeks away, you would think it was already here this week. It is just like summer down at Departure Bay beach where the colorful banners add a festive air.
Take your shoes off and stroll on the beach, or stroll the sidewalk and take a rest on one of the conveniently located benches. Take in the great view and watch a BC Ferry come or go, if you are really lucky you might catch a glimpse of one of our rare seagulls!
A delightful place for people of all ages, seldom what you could really call 'busy'. Gather up the kids, grab a towel, shovel and pail and spend some quality time in the great outdoors.
After all, that is really one of Nanaimo's greater features. Wouldn't you agree?

So, what are you waiting for? Get out and enjoy the great weather!

NEW LIGHTS AT TERMINAL PARK TAKE SHAPE

New Traffic Lights

The new traffic lights at Terminal Park Plaza are moving right along. Crews have had to do extensive work in preparation for this change. Traffic delays have been kept to a minimum while the work is in progress.
If you live in the area, the new light is a welcome addition. If you don't it is probably seen as yet another impediment to getting where you are going.
Is Nanaimo a native word for too many malls and too many traffic lights?

CRACK PIPE ISSUE HEATS UP.....

Nanaimo City Council is not too pleased they were kept out of the loop with regards the decision by Vancouver Island Health Authority to give out crack pipes to drug users.
VIHA says their program was designed to reduce the harm from disease that can be associated with drug use.
Council has called upon VIHA to attend a public meeting to explain why they embarked on this program, and why City Council was not informed of the matter.
This only came to light as the result of a report from a private citizen, apparently the RCMP have been aware of the program for several months now.

WATER RESTRICTIONS START JUN. 1

Nanaimo residents are reminded that this Friday, June 1 local watering restrictions come into effect.
You are not allowed to water from 10:00am - 4:00pm on any day. Odd numbered houses may water on odd days, and even numbered houses may water on even days.
A special reminder if you have an automated sprinking system, be sure to adjust your timers to reflect the restrictions.
Restrictions are in effect until the end of September. When of course there is usually no shortage of 'natural' sources of water for our lawns.

New Name for Centre

PORT of NANAIMO CENTRE
The love it or hate it convention centre is being given a new name as the result of a $1,000,000.00 gift from the Port Authority. The centre will now be named the Port of Nanaimo Centre. The gift is given to the city from the Port Authority in differing amounts over a ten year period. The claim is that the money does not come from Ottawa, but from the Port Authority to show their support for this project. In related news, apparently the city has entered into yet another agreement with Suro/Millenium to build a hotel adjacent to the centre. This is a scaled down version from the previous 30+ storey tower, to a more modest 20 storey building. The city seems satisfied that entering into another agreement with this same company, which failed in previous bids due to lack of financing; is the best deal available at the present time. Does that sound like a ringing endorsement to you?? Perhaps this is the 'only' deal available at this time. Oh well, love it or hate it, the city of Nanaimo is definitely going to have a convention centre downtown and now it has a new name.

Nanaimo Timberman 1-1 After Weekend Games

Nanaimo Timbermen are 1-1 after their Saturday 9-8 loss to the visiting Burnaby Lakers. The game was played at Nanaimo's Frank Crane Arena. They used to play at the old Civic Arena. Remember?
They had won their season opener against defending league champs, Victoria Shamrocks. They defeated the Shamrocks 11-8 on the road last Friday.

OVER THE WEEKEND IN NANAIMO

During the recent Victoria Day weekend the following event ocurred in downtown Nanaimo.
A man was walking down Fitzwilliam Street when he came across a body lying on the sidewalk. He ran to a phone and called 911.
The Nanaimo operator asked him where he was and the man replied, “I’m on Fitzwilliam Street.”

“How do you spell that?” the operator asked.

“Fits..…” the man began. “No, F-i-t-s…..” no, Phizz...…. oh heck, let me drag him over to Front Street and I’ll call you back.”

Another true story from Nanaimo.......honest!

FOOT FERRY ON HOLD

Nanaimo Downtown Ferry Stays Put

Saying that rising financial realities will either mean higher fares or finding new investors or partners; the owners of the downtown Nanaimo to downtown Vancouver foot ferry, have put launch plans on hold.
The service had been scheduled to re-open this long weekend. The previous owners were unable to make this route profitable, causing the closure sometime ago.

Nanaimo residents who had planned on using the service, need other plans obviously. While the weather has been spectacular, swimming is probably out.

Perhaps city hall can dig into the purse a little deeper and help them out. Wait a minute, that was probably a really bad idea.

PLANE LANDS ON PARKWAY.........

As reported in the local daily paper, Rylan Dunn had a Mother's Day to remember this past Sunday.
On his way to visit his mother in Courtney, the 25 year old pilot experienced engine failure shortly after leaving Nanaimo Airport.
He was forced to make an emergency landing in the southbound lane of the Nanaimo Parkway. Fortunately, traffic was light with only one truck in the lane.
Passersby stopped and helped push the plane to one side of the Nanaimo Parkway. The plane was later towed back to the airport under police escort.
It is not reported if he still got to see his mother.

What Are They Doing??

WHAT ARE THESE GUYS DOING?
They are doing the prep work for what Nanaimo absolutely is in need of; that would be yet another traffic light on the highway! LOL
Seems, that after all these years, people can't figure out how to cross the road to get to Terminal Park Shopping Centre.
If you are travelling through Nanaimo, you already know, it is just hurry up and wait, at the next light.
So am I a big fan of more lights? Guess?? Having said that it may be a good thing, provided there is someway to sync the light with the one at St. George Street, to the immediate south of this intersection.
Aw.....Nanaimo....Shopping Malls and traffic lights, but still the absolutely number one, best place to live in all of Canada, or the world for that matter.

What Flower is This??

Can anyone here with a green thumb help me. As all residents of Nanaimo know, gardening is one thing the climate here is well suited to. We live in an older Nanaimo home with an equally old flower garden.
The above flower is one which comes up very faithfully for us year after year, and in fact seems to expand quite nicely. Now for the question; my wife calls them bachelor buttons and I call them pincushions. Are either of us correct or is it known by another name?
Thanks in advance to the avid Nanaimo gardeners who can help with this simple question. You can post your comment to this thread if you wish, or send your reply to admin@nanaimo-info.com

Wrong Number????

Yesterday an employee at a well known Nanaimo business came in to work with both of his ears bandaged.
His boss asked him what happened, so he explained:

"Yesterday I was ironing a shirt in his Nanaimo condo when the phone rang
and I accidentally answered the iron instead of the phone!"

"Well," the boss said, "that explains one ear, but what
about the other?" "They called back!"

This is yet another, true Nanaimo story taken from the everyday life of a not so famous Nanaimo resident.

Not so 'Light' I am afraid

I usually keep the topics on this site on the 'light' side, but today I have to make an exception.

The local daily paper, reports the incident of two grade 8 girls getting into a fight at Fairview School. One of the girls pulled a knife and stabbed the other seriously wounding her. The doctors described the wound as coming close enough to the heart to have been a life threatening wound.

The police took the assailant into custody, but later that night, released the girl into her fathers custody! I presume this is because she has not been charged?

Still this is an attempted murder, not some incident of hair pulling! What kind of system sends a potential murderer back on the street as if it were some minor incident?

They say justice is supposed to be blind, but in this case I think it seems, has lost it's mind.

Put a Smile on Your Face.....

Last night in downtown Nanaimo, a mugger wearing a ski mask jumped into a path of a well-dressed man, coming out of a favourite Nanaimo eatery. He stuck a gun in his ribs "give me your money," he demanded. Indignant, the affluent man replied, "you can't do this – I am a member of the Legislature in Victoria ".
In that case," replied the mugger, "give me MY money."

And Speaking of Politicians:

Q: How many Nanaimo councilors does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Two. One to assure the public that everything possible is being done while the other screws it into a water faucet.

On another note:

This administration at Nanaimo City Hall has conclusively discovered how to deal with the budget.
It’s a skill, which requires addition and distraction.

Smile! These are all true Nanaimo stories......honest!

29% PAY INCREASE FOR MLA's

Would you work here for $98,000 a year?

An inependent group consisiting of three people has recommended a whopping 29% increase for British Columbias MLA's. The study was commissioned after much outcry over a 15% increase which both parties agreed upon last year. The base rate for a 'regular' MLA is currently $76,000 per year, plus, of course travel, living and dining out expenses, all paid for by the taxpayer.
In the current day and age, where CEO's of banks etc. make in the millions, perhaps these wage increases are not out of line. If the higher rate attracts more competent people, then you could argue it is better for the province as a whole.

What do you think? Write me at admin@nanaimo-info.com

Weight Loss Tips

The 4 Tools We Need To Lose Weight
By: Lynn VanDyke

Ask most people what their New Year's Resolutions were and you'll likely find the answer - lose weight. With so many of us wanting to shed the pounds, why is the obesity pandemic reaching new heights?

Weight loss tends to conjure up images of near starvation and tons of cardio. Most of us do not even start on our New Year's Resolution simply because the thought of it stops us dead in our tracks.

What if we had some tools for weight loss? 4 simple ideas that are practically guaranteed to shed fat, drop the weight, and slim us down? That would be a major first step towards a weight loss program.

Tool 1 - Strength Training
We have to recognize this as a viable fat-loss method. Every pound of muscle burns 35-50 calories per day. Adding lean muscle mass is the best way to jump start and sustain fat reduction.

Tool 2 - Cardio
Cardio is good, but it's not the only tool we should use. Cardio should be done as a partner to the other ideas. Anything that gets your heart pumping will do: walking, jogging, running, dancing, swimming, biking, or house cleaning.

Tool 3 - Nutrition
Nutrition is often the hardest part of the weight loss process. We simply forgot how to eat well in our culture. We need to eat protein, carbs, and fat to sustain our way of life. Cut one of the three out and imbalances will occur.

Tool 4 - Rest
Rest is not a luxury. It is a necessity. We should eat well every day and we should workout 5-6 times per week. The leftover 1-2 days are meant for rest. Our muscles need time to rebuild and repair themselves.

Using strength training, cardio, nutrition and rest to our advantage will result in fat loss. There is no magic bullet. Just simple and effective tools to create the body we want. Make a promise to yourself right now. Try using the above tools consistently and to the best of your ability for 4 weeks. You'll look great and feel amazing.
