Car Recharging Stations In Nanaimo

Electric Car Charging Stations at Beban Park

As of Feb. 28, 2012, you can recharge your electric car while you recharge your batteries at Beban Park. Two electric vehicle charge (EVC) stations have been installed at Beban Park Complex in the parking lot in front of Beban Pool.

The charging stations provide a level 2 (240 volt) charges, which can completely recharge a depleted electric vehicle battery in 4 hours. It is not intended that drivers would arrive on site with a totally drained battery, so the station will provide a ‘top up’. Only electric vehicles that are charging will be allowed to park in the designated spots.

“The city has made a commitment to becoming more sustainable and supporting residents who are choosing alternative methods of transportation. More and more electric vehicles are on the road and people are expecting to find this level of service,” explains city fleet Manager, Bruce Labelle.

The charging stations were supplied by Eaton are designed for public use and cost about $2,000.00 each. The annual electrical fee is anticipated to be approximately $400.00 for both charge stations. There will also be charge stations installed downtown, one at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre in the underground parking lot and one at the Port parkade. Once installed the charging stations will be registered with locator websites. For information about the terminals visit www.eaton.com

Nanaimo was one of the first cities in the province to add fully electric vehicles which now includes with three Nissan LEAFs and a converted Ford Ranger. For more information about the ‘sustainable city’ program visit www.nanaimo.ca
