Police Warning Against
Mystery Shopper Fraud

Sidney, BC

The Sidney/North Saanich RCMP are currently investigating several reports of cheque frauds received over the past several weeks.

Help Wanted adds are being printed in news paper classifieds all over the country seeking "MYSTERY SHOPPERS". The unsuspecting job applicant is directed to a website where an application is completed online.

Shortly after, a letter is sent to them by mail, along with a forged bank draft which appears to be legitimate. The applicant is given instructions to deposit the draft and forward a specified amount via an electronic money transfer such as Western Union or Moneygram.

Several weeks later, the victim is advised by their financial institution that the cheque is a forgery, and they are out the cash. The Sidney North Saanich RCMP are urging the public to be aware of this scam and to not send any money if they feel it is suspicious.

These types of frauds and others can be reported to Phonebusters at 1-888-495-8501, or the Nanaimo RCMP detachment at 250-754-2345.
